What Blood Tests a Senior Dog Should Get Before Starting a Longevity Supplement

Before you hand your senior dog a longevity chew, I want a CBC, a chemistry panel with SDMA, a urinalysis, and a T4 on paper in front of me — not because the chew is dangerous, but because you can't tell if it's working without a baseline.

I get some version of the same question every week: a client walks in holding a bag of longevity chews they found online, and they want to know if it’s safe to just start giving them. My answer is always the same, and it usually surprises people. It’s not “yes” or “no” — it’s “let’s run bloodwork first.” Not because I think the supplement is risky. Because without a baseline, neither of us will ever know if it did anything.

Why I test before I let anyone start a supplement

Here’s the premise I want to defend, and I know it’s not the popular one: a longevity supplement without baseline labs is a guess dressed up as a plan. Owners want to skip straight to the product. I understand the instinct — the dog is slowing down, the internet has an answer, and testing feels like a delay. But a 10-year-old Lab mix with early kidney values that nobody caught is not a dog who needs an antioxidant chew first. He’s a dog who needs a treatment plan first, and the supplement — if it belongs at all — comes second.

This isn’t an anti-supplement stance. It’s a sequencing stance. Pair a conventional workup with the integrative option — that’s the whole approach, in one sentence, and it’s the one I keep coming back to in exam rooms.

The panel I actually order

For a dog entering senior status — generally seven and up, earlier for giant breeds — AAHA recommends a comprehensive CBC, a full chemistry panel that includes SDMA alongside the standard liver and kidney values, and a urinalysis, all repeated every six to twelve months once a dog is in the senior bracket. I add a total T4 to that list as a matter of course, because thyroid disease is common in older dogs and easy to miss on a physical exam alone; VCA Animal Hospitals lists thyroid hormone testing as one of the four pillars of senior wellness screening, alongside CBC, biochemistry, and urinalysis.

That’s the minimum database. It tells me kidney and liver function, red and white cell counts, protein and electrolyte status, and whether the thyroid is quietly working against everything else on the dog’s plate. If a chemistry panel comes back with early SDMA elevation, that changes what I’m willing to layer on top of it — a supplement that’s fine for a dog with normal renal values isn’t automatically fine for a dog with stage 1 kidney disease, and you can’t know which dog you have without the panel.

A dog I remember for exactly this reason

I had a 12-year-old spayed female terrier mix, about 24 pounds, come in a couple of years ago because her owner had noticed she was “just tired” — sleeping through the part of the evening she used to spend pacing the kitchen for scraps, and slower getting up onto the couch after dinner. The owner had already bought a longevity chew online and wanted to start it that week. I asked her to hold off two days so we could run labs first. What the supplement side of the conversation actually looks like

Once labs are in hand and there’s nothing actively contraindicating a supplement, the conversation shifts to which ingredients have real support behind them and at what dose. Quercetin is a flavonoid with antioxidant properties studied for immune and cellular support, and resveratrol and quercetin together are antioxidants that support cellular health and vitality — those are structure/function claims, not disease claims, and that distinction matters. Nicotinamide riboside, a NAD+ precursor, supports normal cellular function; the evidence base for that mechanism in dogs is still developing, and I’m careful not to overstate it. Some of the underlying ingredient research is preclinical — Pharmaceuticals (DOI.3390/ph19040525): a study on quercetin and related antioxidant compounds found they did not affect feeding behavior in an invertebrate model at the concentrations tested, which is a useful data point but a long way from a canine clinical trial. Phytomedicine (DOI.1016/j.phymed.2026.158531): A separate look at resveratrol exposure found that early-life dosing sped up development but shortened adult lifespan in that same lower-organism model — a reminder that “antioxidant” doesn’t automatically mean “more is better” or that animal-model findings transfer cleanly to dogs. When I talk to owners about a specific product, I also point them toward the NASC Quality Seal as a baseline quality filter — it doesn’t validate efficacy, but it does mean the manufacturer has passed a third-party facility audit and reports adverse events, which is more scrutiny than most supplements on a shelf ever get.

I’d rather spend forty dollars finding out nothing is wrong than skip the test and find out eight months later that a supplement masked a symptom I should have caught early. That’s the tradeoff I ask every owner to make, and in my experience the ones who do it don’t regret it.
